Obituary for Liviu Iftode

Liviu Iftode
Liviu Iftode, 57, passed away peacefully with his wife at his bedside. He was born in Cristian, Sibiu County, Romania, on April 13, 1959. He was the only child of the late Lucretia Iftode nee Jitariuc, post office operator, and the late Vasile Iftode, postmaster. Liviu grew up in Cristian and attended primary and elementary school in Cristian and Sibiu. He graduated from Gh Lazar High School (valedictorian) in Sibiu, attended The Technical University of Bucharest, Romania, and graduated with BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (diploma with Highest Honor) in 1984. Subsequently he worked as a software engineer at the Research Institute for Computer Technology, Bucharest, and was the head of the System U development team. Between 1991 and 1997, Liviu pursued doctoral studies at Princeton University and received his PhD in Computer Science in 1998. Since 1997 until his passing, Liviu was a faculty member in the Computer Science Department at Rutgers University, receiving Full Professor status in 2009. He also held an Assistant Professor position at the University of Maryland, 2002-2003. Liviu had a very successful career, receiving multiple honors and awards, securing significant funding through prestigious grants, publishing an impressive body of work, and establishing numerous national and international collaborations. His most cherished accomplishment, however, was that of mentoring young people, from high school students to PhD level, both in the US and abroad. Liviu is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cristina Iftode, Associate Professor of Genetics at Rowan University, whom he met in high school. His love for his home country and its people, brought him to Romania time and time again. It was his wish, and that of his wife, to be laid to rest next to his parents, in his beloved birthplace, Cristian.

Family will be receiving friends on Sunday, February 19th 2017 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Princeton Abbey, 75 Mapleton Avenue, Princeton, NJ 08540. An Orthodox Prayer Service will begin at 3 p.m. An Orthodox Funeral and Burial will conclude in Cristian, Romania, next week.
