Obituary for Kit Ying Wong

Kit Ying Wong
Kit Ying Wong, 89, of West Windsor, NJ, died peacefully on Thursday, September 7, 2017. Arrangements were under the care and direction of Ruby Memorial Home of Hightstown, NJ. Family and friends may share memories and offer condolences on Kit's Memorial Page at www.rubymemorialhome.com. Cremation was privately held on Friday, September 8, 2017, at The Crematory at Holy Cross in East Brunswick.

Kit Wong’s Remembrance Gathering will take place on Saturday, October 7th, 2-4pm at Bear Creek Assisted Living, 291 Village Road East in West Windsor, NJ, (609)-918-1075.

Born on July 5, 1928 in Da Peng, Guangzhou Province, China to the late Chen Kong Wong & Lai Chi Leung, Kit (also known as Larry) came to the U.S. in 1945 where his family eventually settled at 16 Oram Drive, Salem Village, Dover, NJ. He had obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from Lehigh University and worked as a Mechanical Engineer at Picatinny Arsenal in Wharton, NJ.

Kit moved from China to Hong Kong at age 3, to Oranjestad, Aruba at age 9 (where his parents owned the Paris and Chesterfield Restaurants) and then emigrated to the United States at 17, not speaking any English. He attended Blair Academy one year to learn English, before going to Lehigh University on scholarship.

Kit was known for a remarkable generous spirit and willingness to help the unfortunate and those suffering abroad. Kit engineered the successful immigration of his mother, sisters (Kit Yue Chow and Kit Fong Wong (Yvonne Loo), deceased), nephews and nieces and was a guiding light to all who passed through his doors. He passionately and actively lobbied for the acceptance (onto our shores by the US Government), immigration and assimilation of many refugees during the Vietnamese boat people crisis, taking Le Hoa Lam Yuen and Kim They Quach into his home, mentoring them and putting them through college.

Kit was a Life master in bridge and master at chess, writing newspaper columns for both of these. He was a champion at soccer, ping-pong, bowling and tennis. He was a lover of precision of words, crossword puzzles, mahjong, was remarkably inquisitive and questioned everything with freshness and wonder. He enjoyed writing poetry, dancing and all genres of music. Kit had a strong will, feisty passion for life, unyielding determination for whatever he pursued, and a witty sense of humor. He had a keen aesthetic and deep appreciation for beauty. Throughout his very full life, he always managed to keep a sense of innocence.

Kit was a beloved husband of 66 years to Jeanette Chien Loo Wong. He was a devoted father to his 2 sons, Dr. Richard Wong and his wife Jaime, Dr. Michael Wong and his wife Lynn, and his daughter, Lisa Dien-Li Wong and her husband Tony Mongiovi.

Kit was a cherished grandfather to Christopher, Brian and Jacqueline Wong, Matthew, Scott and Julia Wong, Taylen Rosario Kit-Ying Mongiovi and 2 Great-Grandchildren Henry Parker Wong and Rebecca Wong.

Kit was big-hearted, generous, thoughtful and always strove to bring stability, strong values, and prosperity through hard-work and education, to those who entered his life, for them… and laying groundwork for all who would come after. He was thoroughly devoted to his family and will be missed dearly by all who knew him. From Kit’s simple beginnings in China, through the arc of his travels that brought him to America, his spiritual imprint and legacy will be felt for many generations to follow. May the joy and openness of all he brought to this world….walk with him into his next journey….

Poem for Dad

The clear stars speak to me with tremulous beauty…
The voice of expression, of the travels being taken
Still watching, feeling, listening, hearing the evening’s brilliant song.

If I could capture all that I love and cherish….I would know the seed was from you
Because you shared deeply with me, I can share myself with the world.

The Journey of life continues…in unspeakable ways…the existence of what was planted
in every soaring dream….
… the continuum of the soul’s vibrations….
