Obituary for Vinod Malhotra

Vinod Kumar Malhotra, affectionately known to many as Vir, Kaka, Chachaji, Jijajee, VK, passed away peacefully on May 15, 2024. Born in Jalandhar, Punjab, India on November 18, 1944, Vinod spent his early years excelling academically and personally, emerging as a high school topper and later a gold medalist in engineering. His humble beginnings in Jalandhar ignited a fierce passion for knowledge and innovation, leading him to a successful career in telecommunications. In 1973, Vinod married his beloved Pratibha, marking the start of a beautiful relationship. His ultimate happiness was raising their two children, Neeraj and Deepali.

Vinod's career brought him to many places, from Chandigarh and Delhi in India to Gulfport and Jackson in Mississippi, before he finally settled in Bridgewater, New Jersey. His contributions to the field of telecommunications earned him the role of Assistant General Manager of IAS. His thoughtful nature and generous spirit were evident in his role as the Director of Network Planning at SAIC, from which he retired in 2000. In his retirement, Vinod continued helping others by teaching critical thinking courses online at the University of Phoenix. Despite his many career successes, Vinod always prioritized family above all else, exhibiting the essence of the saying "the world is one family".

Vinod embraced a life full of hobbies and exploration. He enjoyed reading mystery novels, playing carom board, bridge, monopoly, and words with friends. Tinkering with mechanical and electronic devices and spending time outdoors walking and gardening brought him much joy. His love for music was expressed through his harmonica, and he enjoyed watching his favorite British Comedy, Sci-Fi and mystery TV shows. As a youth, Vinod was an avid kite flyer, symbolic of his own aspirations and humble achievements. His passion for life and continuous learning was evident in his interest in investing and his love for strategy games like chess.

Vinod was a loving father, husband, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his wife of 51 years Pratibha, his son Neeraj and daughter-in-law Erica, his daughter Deepali and son-in-law Joel, his brother Sushil, his sister Raksha and brothers-in-law Satnam Sethi and Kewal Chawla. He leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness in his many nieces and nephews. Vinod was preceded in death by his parents, DesRaj and Vidyawati Malhotra, his sister Versha, his nephew Rakesh and his sister-in-law Sudesh.
