Obituary for Soong Chen

The Chen Family is heartbroken to announce the passing of their beloved Soong Fang Chen.

Soong Fang “Sam” Chen of West Windsor, NJ, died at home on April 14, 2023.
Born in Long-Tuan, Taiwan, in 1934, Soong grew up as the youngest of three sons. After graduating from Taipei University, he served for two years in the Taiwanese Military.

He married his wife of 63 years, Jweiching “Judy” Chen, in 1960. He later graduated from Oklahoma State University with a master’s degree in structural engineering, a field which he served until his retirement. His young family moved to Texas, and later to Queens, NY, before settling down in central New Jersey.

After retiring, Soong remained active as a board member of the West Windsor Area Taiwanese American Association (WAATAA), where he enthusiastically participated in baseball games, picnics, and special events. He lent his bass to the Chime-In chorus, facilitated the West Windsor Senior Center’s Bridge Club, and traveled to all seven continents with his wife and their friends.

Both before and after retirement, Soong prioritized his family above all else. His sons remember him as a solid, constant presence, noting that he taught them how to be good fathers and husbands through his example. He welcomed each daughter-in-law with an open heart, reminding each couple that “team work is number one” to sustaining a strong relationship. He cherished each and every grandchild, walking and bouncing them as infants or taking young ones for a walk so that their parents could finish a meal in peace. As they grew up, his concern was for their health and happiness, and he encouraged them to “take it easy” and “enjoy life.”

Soong leaves behind his beloved wife, Jwei, his dear sons and daughters-in-law James [Grace], Norman [Natalie], and David [Aya], seven adored grandchildren, elder brother Tzu Fang, and cousin Faye Lee.
