Obituary for Shobhana Nandkumar Padte

Shobhana Padte of Carteret, NJ passed away peacefully on October 1, 2021. She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Nanda Padte. She is also survived by her loving children Sapna Padte and her husband Ronak Shah of Boston, MA and Neal Padte and his husband Andy Bagnall of Brooklyn, NY. The light of Shobha's life were her grandchildren, Avani and Nikhil Shah.

Shobha was born in Mumbai, India on August 5, 1944. She and her husband were part of the large group of Indians who immigrated to NJ in the early 1970s. Starting out in Hoboken, they moved to Parsippany before settling in Carteret in 1978. Her pride was seeing her children graduate college, pursue post graduate degrees, establish successful professional careers- and of course, get married.

Longtime Carteret residents may not have known her by name but would recognize the woman who would walk up and down Carteret Ave daily, regardless of the weather. Starting in the mid 1990s and continuing for 20 some years, Shobha looked forward to these daily walks. She was a founding member of the RWJ Fitness Center in Carteret. It was there, in her retirement years, that she finally learned to swim- a lifelong dream of hers. She loved the community of friends she made at the gym.

Throughout her life, Shobha was a dedicated member and volunteer of Marathi Vishwa (MV), a South Asian cultural organization promoting Marathi language, arts, and culture. It was through MV events, and in the way early Marathi immigrants found each other, that Shobha and Nanda created lifelong friendships that spanned the decades. Her friends knew that a Saturday night dinner invitation to her home meant having some of the best curries they could imagine.

Shobha is predeceased by her parents, Prabhakar and Malini Mhatre, and her sister, Alka Raj. In Mumbai, she leaves behind three sisters: Nalini and Ramrao (deceased) Mhatre, Meena and Bhalchandra (deceased) Desai, Shailaja and Satishchandra Mhatre; her brother Shashikant and Asha Mhatre; brothers- in- law Prabhakar and Sunita (deceased) Padte and Vijay and Nalini (deceased) Sharma; and many dear nieces, nephews, and their children.

Shobha loved spending time with her family and friends; she shared in their joys and accomplishments, always making sure they were well fed and happy. In lieu of flowers, her family asks that you pick up the phone- not text or email- and call that person in your life you've been meaning to catch up with.
