Obituary for Ruben Quinones Sosa

Ruben Q. Sosa, 74, of Monroe Township, NJ passed away peacefully on December 13, 2020 surrounded by family. He was born in the coastal town of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico on July 13, 1946. He immigrated to the Bronx, NY as a child and grew up near Crotona Park. He honorably served as a Marine in Vietnam and earned a purple heart, as well as other military distinctions. He is predeceased by his father Francisco, mother Lydia, brother Cano and sister Rosa. He is survived by his children Maia, Tara and Alejandro.

Ruben returned from Vietnam and went on to earn his Bachelor’s and Master’s degree while working full-time in finance on Wall Street. In his downtime, he enjoyed watching Sci-Fi shows and blasting Motown classics from artists like Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Al Green, and The Temptations. Ruben had a green thumb and took great pride tending to his houseplants, careful to mist, fertilize, and constantly repot his indoor jungle. Up until his last days, he maintained an unquenchable childlike curiosity, always asking questions and seeking knowledge, and especially always searching for a good deal. His kids joke that he was a customer service rep’s worst nightmare. Despite his grumpy exterior, he also had a charming wit that could brighten a cashier’s day. His life was a journey filled with heaviness and turmoil which often spilled into his family life, but in his last few years he was finally able to find some semblance of peace. Ruben stubbornly battled End Stage Liver Disease and cirrhosis for 5 years until it was time for him to let go. He leaves an unforgettable impact and will be deeply, deeply missed.
