Obituary for Pushpa M Kothari

Jai Sri Krishna
Jai Swaminarayan

It is with a heavy heart the Kothari Family announces the passing of their beloved Baa, Pushpa M. Kothari. Baa passed away on Friday morning, May 7, 2021 peacefully surrounded by her loved ones. She was 97.

Baa is survived by her children (Minaxi, Jitendra, Panna, Helen and Komal), grandchildren (Birva, Tulsi, Jason, Vaishali, Jill and Shaily) and great-grandchildren (Vikash, Saya, Avni, Mira, Zoey, Kairav, twins: Eleni and Neal, and Amari).

Baa lived a long, joyful, and healthy life with her family. She was born in India in 1923 and immigrated to the United States in 1982. Widowed at a very young age, Baa did not let the loss of her beloved husband affect her positive outlook. Baa greeted everyone she encountered with sparkling eyes, a warm smile, and her hands in the peaceful Namaste position. Through a world war, revolution in India, and most recently a pandemic, she rose above external circumstances and lived a completely unselfish life devoted to her family and service of those in need. Baa was the matriarch of the extended Kothari Family and a pivotal, steadfast presence in the lives of her five children. She was a pillar for her grandchildren, gently imbuing them with her strong sense of morality and religious wisdom. Baa had a zest for life she infused into all her actions, particularly as a playmate and adventurer with her grandchildren and later, great-grandchildren.

Baa was an accomplished woman who was curious about the world. She voraciously sought knowledge through books, travel, and conversation. Through her own sheer will, she gained proficiency in multiple languages and became an avid reader in English, Hindi, and Gujarati. Baa was a fantastic chef and felt deep pleasure in passing on lesser-known Indian recipes to her daughters. She appreciated art and found beauty in small pleasures such as braiding the hair of her granddaughters.

Baa was the unrecognized pioneer of “Netflix and Chill” decades before it was memorialized through her marathons of General Hospital, Columbo and Matlock. She loved sweets and never passed on ice cream. Baa’s memory will continue to live forever in the hearts of her family. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

Those we love don’t go away…

They walk besides us everyday;

Unseen, unheard, but always near,

Still loved, still missed and very dear.
