Jeanette Chien Loo Wong
Known for her devotion to family and her boundless kindness

Jeanette Wong, devoted mother, teacher, and humanitarian, passed away peacefully February 10th at the age of 96. Friends and relatives are invited to attend her Remembrance Gathering on March 9 from 2 to 4 pm at Bear Creek Assisted Living, 291 Village Road East, West Windsor, NJ.

Born in Tianjin, China, Jeanette spent her childhood near the Jade Pagoda across from the Emperor’s Summer Palace. Her father used the spring water there to bottle and introduce Coca-Cola to China. She was one of few women to attend college in China at Fudan University at that time. She emigrated to the United States in 1945 during wartime, and ultimately she completed a bachelor’s degree at Bucknell University, a master’s at Columbia University, and an advanced degree in teaching from the City College of New York.

Jeanette married Kit Y. Wong in 1952 and raised three children in Dover, NJ, though she later moved to Princeton Junction, NJ. She was a public school teacher in New York City for twenty-four years and was drawn to the newly-arrived Chinese immigrants based on her own life experience. She endured the long commute to Chinatown every day to teach immigrant children English and help them assimilate, and she was loved by that community to the end. Her favorite song was “God Bless America” because she earnestly felt that America was the land of the free and a safe harbor for the oppressed. During her life Jeanette opened her own home to over fourteen relatives and two Vietnamese boat people to get them started for life in America.

Open and generous, abundantly warm with boundless kindness, she was devoted to her family. Jeanette was married to Kit for 65 years until his recent passing, and she leaves behind three children, Dr. Richard Wong, Dr. Michael Wong, and Lisa Wong, along with seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Jeanette was gifted at music and possessed an enchanting singing voice. She appreciated art of all kinds, but particularly loved the dance performances of her daughter Lisa. She came from humble beginnings, escaped war in China, and emigrated to America where she embraced all of the wonderful things America represents. She led a joyous life and leaves a legacy of abundant generosity.

Arrangements are under the care of Ruby Memorial of Milltown, NJ. For a full obituary and information about donations please visit rubymemorialhome.com.
