Obituary for Ila M. Patel

The Patel Family is sad to announce the passing of their Beloved Ila M. Patel.
--------------------------
On Sunday, December 11, 2022, Ila Patel, loving wife, mother of two children, and grandmother of three, passed away at home at the age of 69.

Ila was born in 1953 in Sokhda, India to Ramanbhai and Vimlaben Patel. She received her M.Sc. degree in organic chemistry from Gujarat University. On May 25, 1975, she married Mahindra Patel and moved to the US shortly after in 1976. She worked in the pharmaceutical industry and medical lab for several years before settling in Homer, Illinois. Ila welcomed everyone with her smile, her silliness, and her food. She was good at cooking, having learned to cook at the early age of 9, and she enjoyed sharing her culture with others. She was thoughtful even as a young teen, selling her awards to help those in need. She continued with that dedication throughout her life, giving her time and support to others. She supported her family and in-laws as they immigrated to the United States. She volunteered countless hours to the local school district, assisting with fundraising, co-coaching scholastic bowl, and helping in the classroom as a teacher’s aide and later as a substitute teacher. She was involved with the local Girl Scouts, arranging and managing summer camp activities, serving as troop leader, and raising money to take her troop on trips that many children in a small town wouldn’t have had the opportunity to experience otherwise. She also served on the Homer Recreational Board, helping the community for many years. She did all of this while managing multiple offices for her husband’s medical practice and being completely dedicated to her family and raising two daughters. But her happiest moments were as a grandmother to Kimaya, Keyalani, and Om. She spent time reading to them, playing with them, taking them on
walks to the parks, and otherwise spoiling them as much as she could.

Sadly, Ila was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in November of 2019. She fought it valiantly for over
three years before she passed away peacefully on December 11, with her family by her side. Ila was preceded in death by her father, Ramanbhai Patel. She is survived by her husband Mahindra, daughter Sona (husband Akshay), daughter Roopa, mother Vimlaben, brothers Dipak (wife Varsha) and Hemant (wife Asha), and sister Nita (husband Mahendra). We all were fortunate to have had Ila in our lives. Om Shanti.
