Obituary for Harry P. Dilkes III

Harry P. Dilkes, of Edison, N.J. departed this life on August 19, 2021. Born December 11, 1946, in Perth Amboy, NJ, Harry grew up in Iselin, NJ.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Carmelanne (Gniewyk) Dilkes, and a sister, Mary Bangert. He is survived by his three children, David Dilkes and his wife Nicole of Sparta, Laura Kovaleski and her husband Thomas of Manalapan, and Jessica Chase and her husband Michael of Springfield. In addition, he is survived by his six cherished grandchildren: Mary, Jocelynn, Tommy, Devynn, Mitchell, and Mark. He is also survived by four siblings, and his brother-in-law, Eugene.

Harry was a graduate of JFK High School in Iselin and Middlesex County College. He was a combat veteran of the Vietnam War, serving with the 1/12 Red Warriors 4th Infantry Division. His unit awards included the Valorous Unit Award, Cross of Gallantry w/Palm, and Civil Action Medal 1st Class. He also served with the 5th Inf. Div. (Mech.), the 78th Inf. Div. (Jersey Lightning), and the Individual Ready Reserve.

He earned the Expert Rifleman Badge, the CIB (Combat Infantryman Badge), National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Professional Leadership Development Ribbon, Army Service Medal, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 233, the American Legion, and the Disabled American Veterans.

Harry coached youth sports with various local leagues and was a substitute teacher in multiple school districts. He owned and operated Admiral Landscaping as well as the Dilkes Publishing Group. He authored and published "Five Years to DEROS" and "Glancing Back at the First World War."
