Obituary for Bernard S Chen

Bernard S. Chen died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving wife and family on February 8, 2020 at the age of 89. Bernie was born in Shanghai, China in 1930 and immigrated to America in 1954. He attended the University of Missouri to pursue his master’s degree in engineering. After completing his degree, he moved to New Jersey to begin his career at Western Electric. He worked in telecommunications for his entire career, retiring at the age of 62 from Bell Communications Research.

In his free time, Bernie enjoyed watching sports, financial news, and funny movies. He loved to gather with friends and sing karaoke. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Bernie is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda, his daughter, Amy and her husband, Joseph Woo, of Menlo Park, CA, his daughter, Lisa and her husband, Alvin Chin, of Monroe Twp, NJ, his son, Kevin Chen and his wife, Shao, of Monroe Twp, NJ. He is also survived by his seven grandchildren, Jeffrey and Nicole Woo, Jason and Rebecca Chin, Audrey, Anna, and Matthew Chen, his sister, Katherine and her husband, Tony Shen, his sister, Kitty and her husband, Henry Lin, and his brother, Richard Chen.

He is predeceased by his mother and father and his sisters Betty Hsu, Helen Tian, and Dorothy Sheil.
