Obituary for Avijit Dhiren Mukerji

Dr. Avijit Dhiren Mukerji, OBGYN, FACOG, Resident of East Brunswick, New Jersey passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2022 at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York.

February 26, 1953 - March 12, 2022

Dr. Mukerji was born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India. After completing his undergraduate studies in chemistry from the University of Poona, he went on to earn his Masters Degree in Pharmacology from Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. His medical studies began at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara, Mexico and continued at New York Medical College, where he received his Doctorate of Medicine.

He completed his residency at St. Vincent’s Medical Center of Richmond, Staten Island, New York as Chief Resident. Following this, Dr. Mukerji became a Fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, as well as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology at New York Medical College. He practiced medicine for 35 years at Richmond University Medical Center (formerly St. Vincent’s Medical Center) where he dedicated his life to bringing new lives into the world, while passing his knowledge and skills on to new Resident physicians. He worked tirelessly to realize his childhood dream of becoming a doctor, and his love of the profession was manifested in his grueling work schedule and his highly principled work ethic.

Dr. Mukerji is survived by his beloved wife, Bonnie Lynn McKeon, son Satyajit Devanand Mukerji, stepdaughter and stepson Tiziana & Luigi Avenoso, mother Bijoya Mukerji, sister Shanta Seeta Mukerji, brothers Ashok (Lorraine) and Adam (Monisha) Mukerji, nieces Dr. Joya Mukerji, Dr. Indira Mukerji (Arunava), and Aparna Mukerji, and nephew Dr. Indroneil Mukerji (Sheena & Miles).

Dr. Mukerji’s interests included fly fishing, playing with his two German Shepherds, and spending time on Lake Keowee in Salem, South Carolina, where he planned to retire. He will be greatly missed and lovingly remembered by his family, friends, and colleagues
