Obituary for Jasbir Singh Suri
Jasbir Singh (Jesse) K. Suri of Yardley, PA peacefully passed away on September 2nd, 2020. He was born on January 1st, 1938 to the late Kartar Singh and Daya Kaur Suri in Lahore, India (now Pakistan). After marrying Sharda Suri, who is the love of his life, they had three daughters. The Suri’s lived in India until their mid-30s before immigrating and settling in Pittsburgh PA for over 40 years. Even though they eventually moved to the suburbs of Philadelphia, it was Pittsburgh that remained in their hearts and was always considered home…Go Steelers!
Jesse earned an undergraduate degree in Metallurgical Engineering from Pune University in India and a master’s degree in Engineering from The University of Pittsburgh. He worked for most of his career as an engineer and project leader for Mannesman Demag in the steel industry. Jesse retired in 2000, but his intelligence, sharp thinking, and witty humor certainly did not retire with him.
Those who met Jesse either at work or socially can attest to his true zest for life. He enjoyed playing card games like bridge, golfing, savoring his beloved wife Sharda’s Indian cuisine, and traveling on many trips both domestic and international. Some of Jesse’s business adventures led him to Russian cities, Egyptian pyramids, Mexican beaches, and German beer gardens. Jesse and Sharda took many trips together with their family and friends to India, Japan, and all over the United States. He had a global mindset. Alongside travel, he was passionate about politics, economics, and the state of the world. He also had a unique and distinctive hobby, which was palm reading. He loved predicting the futures of family and friends, while always sticking to the positive aspects of their fortunes.
Jesse was very progressive in his thinking and was grounded in his spirituality, practicing his Sikh faith as he aged. He believed in acceptance, kindness, and tolerance. His sense of humor always brought the room to laughter and his intelligence added depth to conversations.
In more recent years, after moving to the Philadelphia suburbs, Jesse’s favorite past times were making chai for his wife Sharda, watching Indian movies, taking walks, playing with his grandkids, and their dogs. He had a gift for staying connected with his family and friends near and far; in-person, on the phone, or via zoom.
Jesse is survived by his wife Sharda and his three children; Ashu Suri Dickinson (Rich Dickinson) of Newtown, PA; Beena Suri of New York, NY; and Mala Suri (Beverly Brown) of Pittsburgh, PA. He is also survived by five grandchildren; Jessy Dickinson, Ben Dickinson, Grace Dickinson of Newtown, PA and Anisse Suri-Brown, Niles Suri-Brown of Pittsburgh PA. He is also survived by Henry Dickinson and Oliver Suri-Brown, his grandchildren’s dogs that he fondly referred to as ‘fuzzy stress relievers’.
Jesse was one of three siblings. He is predeceased by Narinder Singh Suri (Surjit Suri) of New Delhi, India, and survived by Inderjeet Sethi (Narinder Singh Sethi) of Kobe, Japan. He is also predeceased by his loving aunt who helped raise him, Lajawanti Anand, of New Delhi, India.
Finally, Jesse / Dad / Nanu was an optimist who viewed everything with a ‘glass half full’ mentality. He thoroughly believed that we all need to show and demonstrate more love to each other. He also believed that if you want to see a change in the world, you should help lead that change.
