Thirty Four Years of Friendship

I met Jorge in 1983, at Vandenberg Air Force Base, located in Lompoc, California.  He was born and raised in The Bronx, New York, and I was born and raised in Southern California.  Never were there two individuals less likely to see things eye-to-eye, let alone become life-long friends, than the two of us.  But then, Jorge was one of those rare individuals who was able to get along with just about anyone.

Among Jorge’s most endearing qualities, was his sense of humor.  No one made me laugh more than him.  Regardless of the situation, he had the innate ability to bring people together by lightening the mood, getting them to relax, and opening up.  It was impossible to stay “down-in-dumps” around him.  Just remembering this makes me smile.

As much as I enjoyed Jorge’s sense of humor, it was his common sense approach to things that I really appreciated, admired, and respected.  Somehow, he was always able to see things clearly—as they really were, and then able to make the right choice or decision.  I believe he was able to this so effortlessly, because of his ability to interact with all peoples—regardless of their age, color, status, or socioeconomic background.  His sympathy, as well as empathy for others was evident.

Yes, Jorge was an individual with a great sense of humor, and common sense.  And yes, he was an individual who was both sympathetic, as well as empathetic.  But he was also a shining example of the perfect family man—being a loving husband and father to Annie and Christina.

I will miss Jorge.  However, I am a better person for having known him.  And he will always be a part of me.  If ever I am alone, or in crowd  of people, and you find me smiling to myself, it’s probably because I am thinking of Jorge . . .

Good-bye my Friend
