Condolence: Professor Iftode was definitely one of my favorite professor's at Rutgers and he left a great impact on me. I was fortunate to be his student last spring when he taught Operating Systems. His teaching and class helped me land an internship and later a full time job! Graduating this May, I credit him for helping me start my career. May he rest in peace. My deepest condolences to his family.

Condolence From: Tomasz Imielinski
Condolence: Dear Cristina, Please accept our deepest condolences. It was with incredible sadness and shock (even though we knew how ill Liviu was) we have learned about Liviu's passing. I will always remember Liviu in 1997 when as young chair of computer science department, I persuaded Liviu to join us - he had some many top job offers! His presence in our department was critical, vacuum he leaves impossible to fill. From his research to his incredible (and demanding) teaching. Just a week ago a student told me that he learned so much in his class, but he never worked so hard. I will also miss Liviu personally - he was unique! Creative, funny, eccentric and warm. Please let us know how we can help and definitely lets get together as soon as you are ready. We are with you. Tomasz & Celina

Condolence: Dear Cristina, I present you my deepest condolences. I was so shocked and sad to hear about Liviu's passing. I first met Liviu at ISCA conference and a few years later we started to collaborate through the phenix Inria associate team. It has been a great pleasure to work with Liviu, an extremely bright and creative researcher with a great sense of humor. Beyond a colleague I lose a friend. I won't forget his enthousiasm, energy, and generosity. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family in this difficult period. Christine

Condolence From: Ada Stefanescu
Condolence: Deepest condolences to Cristina, fellow friends, students and colleagues. I had the chance to meet Liviu and Cristina through my parents. I was considering applying to colleges in the US, and will never forget Liviu's enthusiasm, kindness, and passion. He encouraged me to go beyond the limits of what I thought was possible. Many years later, that spark led to a research fellowship, meeting good friends and my now husband, and the development of my research and academic medical career. Liviu taught me life lessons I will never forget, and that I now have the privilege to pass on to others. He left this world too soon, and will be sorely missed- though the wisdom and passion he shared with us lives on in generations of students.

Condolence: We had the extraordinary chance to meet Liviu during our last undergraduate years and to work with him on one of his research projects. He was a kind person and a very passionate professor. He taught us to think of the impossible and then to work hard and make it happen. He shaped our life by revealing to us what true research means and by showing us a different world. The lessons learned from him are very much part of who we are today and he will forever live in our hearts. Cristina, sincere condoleante din partea noastra!

Condolence From: Irina and Dragos Stefanescu
Condolence: Words often fail us when we want to give people the praise they deserve. What breaks my heart is that they failed me many times from telling Liviu how much we appreciated his brilliant spirit, his love of people and life, his great sense of humor and optimism and most of all, his generosity for sharing the most precious gift of all: knowledge. Liviu has been a mentor in the true sense of the word and touched the lives of so many people. His standards were high, one had to work hard to keep up, but his love and sensibility were also great. We miss him dearly, but he will always be a part of us. He pushed us to give the best, because he himself gave his utmost best. For this any so many good laughs we shared, we will be forever grateful. God bless you Liviu, you will always be our champion, pride and guiding light. ----- Cristina, Dumnezeu sa-l odihneasca pe Liviu. Va fi mereu parte din noi. Santem alaturi de tine in aceste clipe si te avem mereu in gand, cu mult, mult drag.

Condolence From: Vinod Ganapathy
Condolence: Liviu was a very good friend and mentor. For the past ten years, I had the privilege of being his next-door office neighbour at Rutgers, collaborating closely with him on several projects, and co-advising many students. Over the years, we have had numerous conversations, both personal and professional. He was filled with energy and creativity. Every interaction with him was invigorating , so often interspersed with humour. He was generous with his unusually creative ideas. Starting as a junior faculty member, I was fortunate to have him as a role model. Our very first conversation, which started as a question during my interview talk at Rutgers, and our last phone conversation a few months ago, are etched clearly in my mind. I will miss him terribly. Cristina, my deepest condolences, and I wish you much strength during this difficult time. Vinod

Condolence From: Sarthak Shah
Condolence: Professor Liviu was my mentor, teacher and a great inspiration. When I started at Rutgers, I had no direction. After hearing about Professor Liviu's class I decided to meet with him and in the first meeting I knew this was someone really special and that moment turned out to be life changing. I worked with professor Liviu for 3 semesters including the summers and his passion for computer science and his zeal of always wanting to do more was a great motivation. He would be awake at 2 in the night replying to questions online. He used to introduce me as one of his best students from the class and showed a lot of confidence in me when I was still learning and figuring out new things. He always encouraged me to do more and gave me opportunities to be the best. He shaped up my career in the true sense. After graduation, we spoke about mentoring students and he said his biggest achievement was when students did well in their lives and careers and he had a role to play in it. I am sure he would have changed many lives like mine and he would always live on through his family, friends and students. Condolences to the entire family.

Condolence: Liviu was my thesis advisor. And a great friend. Of the many fond memories I have of our interactions during grad school and after, the one that stands out is that of our drive together from Rutgers to CMU. Six hours went by in six mins-- such was his charisma and zeal for life. The conversations never ended. My heart goes out to Cristina for her loss. Although I have only met you once, visiting your home was like visiting my own. You'll be in our prayers. Liviu-- you are dearly missed. As a mentor and friend. Your energy was infectious. Your smile unforgettable. Your hunger for ideas inspiring. You will continue to live in our memories. Rest in peace.

Condolence: Dear Cristina: Athena and myself were shocked and deeply saddened by your loss. We can only fathom how hard it is for you; our thoughts and prayers are with you. I consider Liviu as one of my dearest friends and I have very fond memories of our time together at Princeton. I admired him for his achievements and his passion, I loved his sense of humor, and I was always touched by his devotion to his family and his roots. Although distance did not allow me to keep a close contact, I was always hoping that we would somehow get the opportunity to reconnect and spend time together. May God rest his soul in peace and may He give you strength. Liviu: goodbye my good friend. I am so sorry I cannot be there.

Condolence From: Florin Sultan
Condolence: When I first arrived at Rutgers as a grad student, Liviu and Cristina hosted me in their home with gracious generosity. He was still a grad student at Princeton, and I could not have known that he would go on to become a professor at Rutgers, and that he would be my Ph.D. advisor. I was one of his first students. To Liviu, as if he were here: My dear Professor, I will never forget your generosity, your infectious laughter, the brilliance, that unique sparkle in your eyes when we were discussing an enticing idea, and the warm, half-joking smile with which you were trying to lift our spirits when times were rough. All these, together with the continual push for excellence, the drive to unveil the fundamental concepts, the effort to shape and present them with concision and clarity. Because all of these were you, they live on within me. I will never forget you. Your student, forever. To Cristina: my deep condolences, and may God help you find peace and comfort in knowing how much he was loved and appreciated by those he touched in his path. This is where he lives forever.

Condolence: When Liviu was a grad student at Princeton I worked with him for my undergrad research project and then after I graduated I worked with him as a software engineer in the CS department for about nine months. Liviu was truly fun to work with and I learned so much from him. His enthusiasm for CS research is one of the reasons I went to grad school. He had a big influence on my life and I am sure also that of his students at Rutgers. My condolences to his family.
