Houses of Worship

Houses of Worship

Christine Cuoco, Manager of Ruby Memorial, is closely involved with many of the houses of worship in New Jersey. It's a natural outgrowth of her dedication to serving the congregational members of the Coptic Orthodox Church, as well as the Hindu temples, Sikh Gurdwaras and Buddhist temples located throughout the state. For your convenience, she's added this web page listing not only the South Asian temples but also the Coptic Churches located in the Garden State. If you have questions about what you see here, or would like to add or modify a listing, please contact Christine Cuoco at 862-368-2626.

Hindu Temples in New Jersey

No one can possibly ignore the most recent addition to the already long list of Hindu temples: there's been so much written and said about the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Robbinsville which is the home of 15 sacred statues (murtis). Journalist Carol Kuruvilla, author of the New York Daily News 2014 online article "PHOTOS: Stunning Hindu Temple in New Jersey is one of the Largest in America".

It's been described as "a living breathing house of God" by a spokesperson of the Bochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam Swaminara Sanstha, also known as BAPS; which is “a socio-spiritual Hindu organization with its roots in the Vedas". This is the sixth traditional BAPS mandir in North America that is made completely of stone. Ms. Kuruvilla writes of its inherent beauty:

“The intricately carved temple features 98 pillars and two large domes made from Italian marble, encased in a larger building to protect it from the Northeast’s volatile weather. Nearly every foot of the temple is decorated, from the mosaic stone floors to a ceiling carved with lotus flowers. There are 44 representations of the elephant god Ganesh in the building and 236 images of peacocks." It's truly a serene and sacred space.

Wikipedia's "Hindu Temple" offers a reader an insightful look at the significance, meaning, forms and designs of the mandir, using the words of George Michell, author of The Hindu Temple: An Introduction to its Meaning and Forms (1988), who described it as "a space and structure designed to bring human beings and gods together. It functions as a place of transcendence, where man may cross over from the world of illusion to one of knowledge and truth." Each of the following Hindu mandirs offers visitors the same remarkable opportunities to learn, grow, and find greater peace:

Gurdwaras

The word "Gurdwara" has a beautiful translation: it is the "gateway through which the Guru can be reached". There are a number of Gurdwaras in our state, where you can not only find community, but obtain religious literature and instruction and receive the nutritional offerings of the Langar, the community kitchen which provides free meals to anyone who needs physical sustenance.
